Tim Tszyu watching Charlo-Castaño fight closely as $10 million payday beckons

Tim Tszyu will be watching closely when Jermell Charlo and Brian Castaño go head to head in their blockbuster fight.

The Australian is the No. 1 mandatory contender for Castaño’s WBO super welterweight belt and is one of just a few boxers who could fight the unified champion later this year.

“Castaño can make things rough – he’s unpredictable – whereas Charlo is more of a classical type of boxer,” Tszyu told Main Event’s Ben Damon.

“I’m not expecting anything spectacular from Charlo – he will use his jab – and I think he will probably get the points win without looking too amazing.”

And the payday would be massive if Tszyu does get to fight the winner, although a bout with Englishman Liam Smith appears a more likely next-step.

Tszyu’s promoter George Rose told The Sun-Herald in April he would be prepared to spend $10 million to land a fight with either Charlo or Castaño.

Triple world champion Charlo fights for an undisputed global super welterweight title on Sunday when he faces Argentina’s Castaño at San Antonio, Texas.

The fight will mark the first time all four major 154-pound crowns — Charlo’s WBA, WBC and IBF titles and Castaño’s WBO belt — will be up for grabs at the same time.

Charlo (34-1 with 18 knockouts) won his WBC crown over fellow American Tony Harrison in December 2019 — avenging his only career loss — and took the others last September with an eighth-round knockout of Dominican Jeison Rosario.

Charlo is willing to put all his titles on the line in his fight against Castaño.

“My experience inside and outside of the ring has all led up to this,” he said.

“Now is the time for me to put it all on the line.

“This is huge. It’s a legacy fight for me and I’m ready for it.

“This is a major fight because it’s history for me … the belts and the money are not on my mind. What’s on my mind is the legacy.”

Castaño (17-0 with one drawn and 12 knockouts) defeated Brazil’s Patrick Teixeira by unanimous decision last February to claim the WBO crown.

“This is the fight of my life,” Castaño said.

“I’m out for glory. I want to be the first in history to be undisputed champion at 154 pounds in the four-belt era. This will be the hardest fight of my career.”

Making the fight even more intriguing is the belief that if Charlo wins, he will relinquish his four titles and move up to the middleweight division, where his twin brother Jermall Charlo hold the WBC title.

Tim Tszyu vs Terrell Gausha Showtime tripleheader official for March 26th

Tszyu vs Gausha live stream : Top super welterweight contender and rising star Tim Tszyu will make his long-awaited U.S. debut when he takes on U.S. Olympian Terrell Gausha in a 12-round showdown that headlines action live on SHOWTIME Saturday, March 26 from The Armory in Minneapolis in a Premier Boxing Champions event.

Tim Tszyu

Tszyu’s (20-0, 15 KO) fight with Gausha (22-2-1, 11 KO) will proceed as planned, as will Michel Rivera’s (22-0, 14 KO) catchweight battle with the freefalling Joseph Adorno (14-0-2, 12 KO). One adjustment from the original lineup has been made, however; Yoelvis Gomez was forced out of his planned bout with Jorge Cota, so Elvis Rodriguez (12-1-1, 11 KO) will open the show against Juan Jose Velasco (23-2, 14 KO). Rodriguez bounced back from an upset loss to Kenneth Sims Jr. by knocking out unbeaten Juan Pablo Romero in November, while Velasco is 3-0 since consecutive knockout losses to Regis Prograis and Mario Barrios.

It’s a very solid lineup that’s presently running unopposed; the other major shows on that date, Martinez-Warrington 2 and Riakoprhe-Jumah, both air during British primetime.

“I’m very excited to be fighting in the U.S., especially on SHOWTIME, where my dad was featured for most of his career,” said Tszyu. “I’m proud and excited to continue on the Tszyu name with SHOWTIME. Once I take care of Gausha, I will be coming for the title.”

“I’ve been ready for this fight for a long time,” said Gausha. “I came into this game to be a world champion and fight the best. I expect Tim to come in great shape and I’ll also come in my best shape to put on a great fight for the fans. My coaches are getting me prepared perfectly for the kind of fight I need to put on so that I can leave the ring victorious.”

Tim Tszyu’s big ‘mistake’ fighting Inoue

Oozing belief, Japanese ironman Takeshi Inoue believes Tim Tszyu has bitten off more than he can chew and won’t go the distance in next week’s high-stakes super-welterweight showdown in Sydney.

Made of steel and already feasting on prime Australian beef steak, Inoue put on a show in his first training session since arriving in town only on Monday.

Happily posing his eight-pack for the cameras, the powerhouse world No.7 wasted no time displaying why his only defeat in 19 fights has been a tight points decision against Mexico’s unbeaten former WBO junior middleweight champion Jaime Munguia.

“My condition has gotten better and also my punch is now very, very powerful so I can beat Tim Tszyu,” Inoue said through an interpreter on Tuesday.

Tim Tszyu

“I respect his results because Tim Tszyu has not lost.

“I respect also his boxing technique and I basically respect everything about him.

“But towards the end of the fight, I’m thinking of knockout. That’s how I’m practising.”

The 31-year-old plans on exposing Tsyzu’s inexperience against genuine world-class international rivals when they collide at Qudos Bank Arena on Wednesday week.

“Tim Tszyu has only had fights in Australia. He hasn’t got experience overseas. I have more experience, including (against) Munguia,” Inoue said.

“OK, I lost but his fight was very close so I am quite confident and I have much more experience so I think I can beat Tim Tszyu.”

Having forged his own formidable 19-from-19 record, Tszyu is the mandatory top-ranked challenger for Brian Castano’s super-welterweight world title next year.

But the Sydneysider readily admits taking on Inoue is a “risk”.

Inoue’s supremely confident trainer, Tatsuya Saita – or Mr Saita to his charge – believes it’s more than a risk, with a loss placing Tszyu’s 2022 world title ambitions in jeopardy.

“It is a mistake,” Saita said.

“If I were Tim’s promoter, I wouldn’t let him fight against Takeshi.

“Now he has chosen Takeshi, he may regret his choice.”

Inoue is one of the few opponents to go the full 12 rounds with Munguia, who has won 30 of his 37 bouts by knockout.

And Saita doesn’t expect Tszyu to handle the step up in class, predicting a knockout win for the Japanese warrior “in the seventh to ninth round”.

“Tim Tszyu’s experience is limited to fighting in Australia,” the trainer said.

“I don’t think he has fought a boxer as heavy as Takeshi. Most of his opponents were lighter.

“Although he has fought against Denis Hogan, when I watched the match, I didn’t think Tszyu was that strong.

“Takeshi could possibly exceed Denis Hogan two or three times.”

The Aussie superstar was due to take on Inoue at Gold Coast Convention Centre next month, but the fight has now been moved to Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney. Tszyu confirmed on social media on Wednesday night that the fight would now take place indoors in Sydney, as the city comes out of a lengthy lockdown period. No Limit boss George Rose confirmed the news of the move away from Queensland on Tuesday.

“The ongoing uncertainty regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, specifically the impact of hotel quarantine on the health and welfare of our fighters made it impossible for the fight to continue in Queensland,” Rose said.

“I want to stress that we are completely supportive of the hotel quarantine system and would like to specifically thank Queensland Health for doing all they could to make this fight happen on the Gold Coast.

“I would also like to thank Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate and the team at Major Events Gold Coast for their commitment and support of this event.

“I can promise everyone that No Limit Boxing will be back on the Gold Coast bigger and better than ever in 2022.”

Gold Coast confirmed to host Tim Tszyu versus Takeshi Inoue

Big-time boxing will return to the Gold Coast later this year when Australia’s golden boy of the ring Tim Tszyu takes on Takeshi Inoue on November 17.

The Gold Coast Convention Centre will play host to the fight which Tszyu admits is the biggest test of his career to date.

Tszyu is 19-0 in his professional career and has risen the super-welterweight ranks to put his name in world title contention.

Tim Tszyu

As the current mandatory for Brian Castano’s WBO title, Tszyu could have sat out and waited for his shot, instead he’s taking on former world title challenger Inoue (17-1-1).

The pair faced off in a virtual press conference on Thursday, with both fighters promising fireworks.

“Tszyu is a very good fighter but I’m very confident in my ability,” Inoue said.

“This is an exciting opportunity for me to make a mark on the world stage and I truly believe I will finish Tszyu with a knock-out in this fight.”

Tszyu, who has finished his last five opponents, said he was keen to put on a show.

“Inoue is a very accomplished and talented fighter.  He is crafty in the ring and like all Japanese boxers, very brave,” Tszyu said.

“He will need to be though because I know he has never fought anyone like me before.

“I’m putting in the hard work now and come fight night, I’m going to be ready to show the world once again just what I can do.”

Despite spending plenty of time on the Gold Coast, it will be Tszyu’s first fight in Queensland since 2018.

“The Gold Coast is a sports-lovers paradise and we are delighted to have the opportunity to bring Tim Tszyu back for this blockbuster event,” No Limit Boxing’s George Rose said.

“Tim has a lot of fans in Queensland and with a large Japanese community also based in the Gold Coast region, this is certain to be one of the biggest events of the year.”

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate also spoke of his excitement about bringing the bout to boxing fans on the coast.

“We are a big events city and this fight fits the bill perfectly,” Tate said.

“Tim is our adopted son. He loves being on the Gold Coast when away from Sydney and he has established our city as his second training base.

“I applaud promoters and Major Events Gold Coast for bringing this mega fight together. I’ll be ringside when the bell rings.”

Tim Tszyu vs Takeshi Inoue in November 17 showdown

Tim Tszyu has finally secured a fight, stepping into the ring on November 17 to take on Takeshi Inoue.

No location has been set for the bout at this stage, though Queensland is currently in the box seat to host the event.

The 31-year-old Japanese fighter represents another step up in competition as Tszyu continues to make his case for a title shot.

Inoue (17-1-1), no relation to pound-for-pound no. 1 contender Naoya Inoue, is ranked seventh with the WBO, his only loss coming by decision to then-champion Jaime Munguia in a 2019 world title fight.

Tim Tszyu

“I’ve finally got a world-rated opponent,” Tszyu tells Sporting News.

“That’s what I was looking for, someone not from Australia who’s been in there with a world champion before, which is going to be a good test.”

Already the mandatory challenger to Brian Castano’s WBO world title, Tszyu could have sat out and waited for the champ, instead he’s risking it all in order to keep active.

“Nah I’m not that type of guy. I like to fight and keep myself going,” he added.

Tszyu, 26, has put together an impressive 19-0 professional record, finishing his last six opponents and becoming the face of Australian boxing in the process.

Despite his profile at home, Tszyu has been unable to secure a fight with the big boys at super welterweight.

Castano and WBA, WBC and IBF champion Jermell Charlo recently fought to a draw in their title unification bout, not helping Tszyu’s chances of getting a shot at either.

Tszyu then appeared to be on track for a fight with former WBC champ Tony Harrison, but he says the American’s “unprofessional” team couldn’t get that one over the line.

With the Inoue bout now locked in, Tszyu says fans can expect fireworks.
